HTC Sensation XL With Beats Audio Smartphone Review   by Rachel Tremore

The new HTC Sensation XL features Beats technology and some rather flash custom headphones. These are not the actual Dr Dre Beats Audio Headphones that retail at over £130 but are very good and feel like good value. Android will recognise the headphones and provide the necessary options to customise the enhanced sound they provide. Very exciting indeed, but not quite as good the real thing.

Beats Electronics was founded in 2006 by world famous Hip-Hop producer and raper Dr Dre. Beats Audio headset sales are now poised set to surpass both Bose and Seinnheisser as the most desirable headphones, for over a £100. They are expensive and in our opinion, not as superior to comparably priced headphones from Sennheiser. However, when plugged into the white version of the XL, they make an awesome pair and look very cool, which is what most of the target market for these products, are primarily concerned with.

If you really want to listen to music properly, go and see some live, or get an old valve amp and some decent speakers, a record player and some vinyl. Not very portable, but much better than Mp3 and CD format. This smartphone is not just excellent for storing and playing music. As with most of the HTC's, the display is incredibly crisp and at 4.7″ is ideal for watching videos or web browsing with the HD resolution is noticeable, even down to widgets and menu's.

As an extra service you can subscribe to HTC's Watch movie service. Designed to optimise media specifically for replay on QHD display screens. QHD squeezes 1/4 of the pixels of a 40 inch screen into just 4.3 inches of smartphone display. Watch offers a good range of films for a competitive price and certainly saves time trawling through torrents looking for the right download. The screen is covered by 'un-scratchable' Gorilla Glass, pioneered by HTC and now standard on most new touchscreen based smartphones.

Rather surprisingly this smartphone does not feature a Dual Core processor and instead comes with 1.5 GHz Scorpion CPU. It's fast but it would be nice to see a Dual Core included, particualry if you plan to store loads of music on the device. This being said, the battery life is great with a claimed talk time of upto 360 h (2G) and upto 460 h (3G). Dual's are a drain the battery so there may be some logic here!

Overall, a fantastic phone, packed full of features and bound to entertain for hours. If you fancya change from the ipod/iphone or want enhanced sound for those favourite tunes. Available on multiple networks, look out for the sim-free version, coming out for Christmas 2012.
