How To Softmod Wii Game Consoles And Why You Should
Are you one of those long term gamers who owns a Nintendo Wii, a GameCube, a Nintendo 64, and of course a clutter of controllers and cables? It is time to put away the old game consoles, and learn how to softmod Wii game consoles so you can play them all on one system, unlock Wii Homebrew, play DVDs, and much more. Your Wii will have more power than you can imagine.
The Wii has more capability than Nintendo is allowing us to access. It can play DVD discs. It can use game emulators to play our older Nintendo games. It can even play backup and copied games. Since Nintendo does not want to release all of these superior features to us, the technical geniuses in the Wii community hacked a solution for us. They have created methods to softmod Wii game consoles to unlock all of these features.
You can have your Wii hardware modified with a mod chip and have all of these features also, but you will void your warranty, and can potentially break your Wii and make it useless. This is why it is recommended to learn how to softmod Wii, rather than taking the hardware route.
There are a few requirements you must meet before you learn how to softmod Wii. You will first need to have an SD memory card to hold the files for doing the softmod. The card needs to be formatted with a FAT32 file system to work properly in the Wii. For the most reliable results, buy an SD card of 2 gigabytes. You do not want to go larger, or your Wii may have trouble accessing it properly.
Depending on the age of your firmware, you have a couple options to go with. Older versions of firmware can use the Twilight Princess hack. This requires you have a copy of Zelda Twilight Princess. Most people today prefer not to use the Twilight hack because it requires you to go out and buy or rent a copy of Zelda Twilight Princess. The method I talk about below is much easier.
I personally recommend following a guide with videos and pictures that teaches you how to softmod Wii consoles. The reason for this is because it's much easier to follow along with, and the best guides come with the files you need no matter which firmware version you have. This saves you the frustration of searching the web for the files and hoping you don't download a corrupted file that can harm your Wii. You also don't need to get a copy of Twilight Princess. We are not going to try and cover the step by step instructions of how to softmod Wii consoles here, but let us cover a brief overview. You will need to download the exploit files and the bootmii files onto your SD card. You will then be finding them on your SD card by going through the data management screens in your Wii options screen. Once you locate the files on the SD card tab, they will launch and do the work for you.
The first time you do this, I highly recommend you follow a video and illustration guide of the process. It makes learning how to softmod Wii systems very easy, and they often also have the files right along with the guides. The process to unlock your Wii and install the Homebrew channel can be done in under 15 minutes once you have your SD card and the files downloaded. You are going to love the added features your Wii will have.
