SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny PSP GAME
Until now Tekken has been the only solid 3D fighter to arrive on the PSP. Years ago when Tekken: Dark Resurrection arrived on the PSP, I praised it for being a great game that brought the very same console experience in the portable world, complete with a story mode, endings and everything. So with SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny on the road, I expected to see that same kind of treatment. And while Broken Destiny delivers in many areas, not in a critical aspect ...

... This aspect is a decent story mode, which comes complete with individual extensions. A mission-based mode called The Gauntlet serves as this game's core experience and frankly it's pretty awful. Mainly the game pits you against many rivals, but instead of full fledged games, you have to perform specific tasks / requirements that appear on the screen to move forward. Now each of these "tasks" goods on average. Approximately five seconds, with a few selected to go as much as 20 These "assignments" will often require you to dodge an attack, block an attack, block and then counter attack or dodge then counter attack. Needless to say that these mission requirements are pretty monotonous and tires quick. Sure there is a mildly entertaining story behind The Gauntlet, but it's not nearly funny enough to play mode.
Now that the great gameplay transition from console to handheld yesterday SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny doing everything just right. Just how Tekken: Dark Resurrection made its way flawlessly into the PSP, you can expect the same level of quality from Broken Destiny's matches, complete with its amazing liquid. A total of 30 warriors found in the game, one of which is Kratos, in addition to a completely new fighter Dampierre. Kratos is one of the heavier push Broken Destiny, which he is actually the most prominent figure on the game's box art.
Of course, of course, Kratos was my first pick to contend with, and it felt fantastic to kick some ass with him. He retains all his signature attacks from the game, and they are especially great to pull off, too. Also thanks to Sony, Namco-Bandai had proper help when integrating Kratos into the SC universe. Actually, from what I was told by a Namco rep the Kratos model in the game is actually the same one found in God of War: Chains of Olympus, which is very cool.
Figure Adaptation has been largely transferred from SoulCalibur IV, which means you'll be able to put your creativity to good use in the game, you are welcome to create an entirely new fighter aircraft, or edit an existing one to your liking. But another complaint to the address here is that Broken Destiny does not offer nearly as many unlockables as SCIV did, no extra items for character customization. And while I understand this is a UMD game, it's not like Broken Destiny comes loaded with CG endings and cut scenes for each character. And it's not like unlockables takes up so much space anyways.
I will say this much for the general QuickPlay matches SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny is amazing. The fighting mechanics are still some of the most polished out there, and it really makes a great fighter. But if you're looking for plenty of gameplay modes that you can play again and again to unlock the cutscenes and such, it is not your game. Modes include Quick Play, experiment, The Gauntlet and Multiplayer, which is limited to two-player Ad-hoc, so no online gameplay here, as you will have with console games.
Now, in my hands-on preview of the game last month, I had to rant about a certain aesthetic choices that Namco has swung at and I will regurgitate what I was saying ... You see, it seems like ever since the apparent closure of Dead or Alive franchises, Namco Bandai, has felt the need to fill an all-Campy-bouncing-boobs void that the industry certainly does not need at first. I am not a moral God. Hell, I love me a curvy woman ... I just prefer that the woman must be real. I feel very embarrassed to play a videogame, where nearly half of the polygon count for almost half the people in their coffins. It continues to perpetuate a stereotype that this industry needs to get rid of a stereotype that calls the players lonely, geeky, virgin losers. Forgive my boldness, but it is simply the perception of a majority of people still have of us.
With the rant out of the way, at least when you play on PSP, you do not feel so embarrassed, because chances are nobody will notice the ridiculous detail put into the female warriors, thanks to screen size, unless they is standing and looking directly above your shoulders. So you can enjoy the game for what it is, a great fighter. Yea, though I just went on a quasi-dropouts, there is still no denying that SoulCalibur games are great to play warriors who have kept many coming back for years. And beyond the questionable aesthetic choices is Broken Destiny actually a damn fine looking PSP game, boasting great character detail, beautiful backgrounds, fluid animations, great framerate and other sharp visual touches.
If you've played SoulCalibur game in awhile, you know exactly what to expect from the sound. The sound consists of the following SC franchise essentials: The fight announcer, fighters with the voice actors who brags quickly before the match and a soundtrack that is similar to the tones of the past SC games. Broken Destiny is all this with ease, as one would expect, and also allows you to use Japanese voices. There is nothing really monumental to the sound in the game because I pretty much have covered all there is to it.
Honestly, do if you are looking for a fighter and not have a copy of Tekken: Dark Resurrection for PSP, I'd just go out and buy it instead of Broken Destiny, especially since Tekken can be had for cheap. SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny is not a bad game, it feels very barebones in many areas, despite boasting one of the all time best mechanics with a 3D fighter. Once that hits $ 20 mark, I'd spring for it - otherwise, leave this one alone for now, there are other fighters out there for PSP.
