My Take On Big Brother Seen On Cbs On Dish Network

"Big Brother" is my summer crack. My DISH DVR is set to record Big Brother every time it comes on, three nights a week - Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday (live eviction night!). The hit CBS reality show that sticks a group of people in a house surrounded by cameras 24/7 has gotten the best of me. And it has for 10 summers in a row now (plus that one winter edition they rolled out last year). I can't explain exactly why I'm so hooked on this show...nothing extraordinary happens beyond the usual backstabbing, backflipping, and backtracking. I guess it's just so mindlessly simple that it fits in perfectly with the summer mindset - I just want to lounge back, have a cool drink, and watch my little hamsters bicker back and forth as they scramble to keep their place in the house.

The point of the show is simply this: stay in the house long enough be the last one standing, all to the tune of a grand prize of $500,000 dollars. Not too shabby for sitting around a house all summer long, lounging in the pool and engaging in a few challenges. The key is not to only stay in the house, but to do so in a way that you don't burn all your bridges. After all, the last seven contestants voted out before the Final Two will be the ones casting the deciding votes. So you must scheme and oust your fellow houseguests oh so stealthily, as to not tip anyone off that you are the mastermind behind their eviction.

And another key – try to refrain from making too many personal attacks on said evictees, as excruciatingly hard as that may be, for those are the sorts of slip-ups that will come back and bite you in the behind.  Last year's winner Dan Gheesling had this down to an artform. He quietly planned and schemed, all the while making nicey-nice with his fellow roomies. And in the end, although some were bitter, not one person could help admitting that Dan played the game to perfection. He outplayed them all, while craftily shifting the blame onto his minions, yet bit his tongue and never made it personal.  And for the first time in Big Brother history, the final vote was unanimous. Every time a new season of "Big Brother" starts, I am always doubtful that we will get a dynamic crop of houseguests. And every year I am wrong.

This year wasted no time in rolling out the drama. By episode three there had already been THREE major blowouts, and friends had already began to turn on each other while teammates switched alliances before the first week was out.  This is drama that week three is made of! So maybe I was wrong...this season wasn't going to be boring after all. This years batch of victims are broken down into four "groups" that are meant to parallel those of high school: the Populars, the Brains, the Athletes, and the Offbeats (I still stand by my argument that Athletes and Populars are essentially one in the same. I mean, did you ever know any football players or cheerleaders who weren't part of the cool crowd?) Producers also brought back one of last years contestants to head up the Athlete group - the body-worshipping Jessie - and I was ready to crown him my most hated houseguest of the season, that is, until I met Ronnie.

This spectacled, pot-bellied Star Wars afficiando (obviously one of the Brains, though that's still up for debate) has lied and schemed his way to the top of my "Most Hated Houseguest Ever" list in two weeks flat. And Ronnie's fault is not that he schemes - it is a game after all - it's that he schemes so badly. He overplayed his hand so early on in the game that he couldn't even keep all his balls in the air or keep track of who he was lying to and who he was telling truth. Instead of sticking with just one alliance, Ronnie made about five different alliances, and not long after he won Head of Household (the creme de le creme of power standing in the BB house), the houseguests put two and two together and outed Ronnie's manipulations.

After unsuccessfully trying to deflect the group attack, his lies exposed, the self described "power-player and manipulator" holed himself up in his bedroom to lick his wounds.  Hotheaded Russell "The Love Muscle/Shotgun" (who clearly has one too many self-inflicted nicknames) wasted no time in to sweep in and taunt the rat with verbal assaults, in such glorious ways that only a former high school bully can spit (everything short of giving him a wedgie or dunking his head in the toilet, which probably would have counted as assault). Normally I would side with the Ronnie character in this attack, but given Ronnie's obnoxious 'tude, I savored every moment of Russell's torture. As always, I have a few early faves to win the game, namely Jeff, the advertising salesman from Chicago. Jeff, who is clearly aware he can't pronounce the word "bully" as everyone else does, almost seems to good for the depravity of this game. He has kept his cool throughout several verbal onslaughts (even while using the elliptical!), steered clear of the drama, all the while romancing the cute and bubbly Kate Bosworth lookalike Jordan.

Their "showmance" is the centerpiece to this summer's drama. Every summer there's two houseguests who will clearly not be able to maintain a relationship outside the house, but in the meantime they're oh so cute to watch. And I haven't forgotten about the other houseguests. Casey is a cool cat, but a 41 year old who dresses like he's 17 is never that cool in the real world.  The tattooed Lydia showed promise in the beginning, but despite being part of the "offbeat group" in the house, she is nothing but a sheep who drifts to whoever has the power at any given moment. Her cohort Kevin is supposed to be the "sassy gay" of the season (there's one every year), but he hasn't done anything particularly sassy yet, short of wearing blue pants alot. Russell frequently jumps into bouts of 'roid rage, then has quiet moments of conversation about relationships with Kevin on the hammock. Michelle is still kind of invisible, Chima is  blending in nicely and not causing a stir, and Natalie had the genius idea of telling everyone in the house that she was only eighteen, as if actually being 24 is some sort of an early threat? If you're not a "Big Brother" fan, and have yet to catch it on tv, I highly recommend you jump into the shark tank while it's still pretty full. There's alot more bloodshed to come, and I wouldn't miss this chum for the world.
