How To Get Sega Genesis Collection
Sega has always gone out of their way to re
How To Get Sega Genesis Collection
ard the old school gaming fans, and recently they gave us all a great deal with Sega Genesis Collection, which they released for both PS2 and PSP. You can find our review of the PS2 version here, and now we get a chance to check out the PSP version ... which is much the same, but slightly different in a variety of areas. The kernel is this game appeal to more fans than handheld console fans, if only because it is usually more accepted to be older - or new 2D - bets on them and people have come to even expect such titles. PSP is a perfect platform for this collection, let's take a look at how well Sega brings 28 classic Genesis games to a whole new generation.
We come across the first significant difference between PS2 and PSP versions when we examine the graphics category. Obviously we can not compare good 16-bit graphics to the current graphical presentations, but one thing is usually quite important, these reproductions faithfully depicts the old classics correct? PS2 version supports progressive scan, but the PSP version has a feature that may appeal more to gaming veterans: the ability to watch games in their original resolution, or even stretch the image to fill the screen. The latter do not screw with the display as much as you might think, either, so it's a nice addition to the menu items. For the rest, there may be a bit more in the way of graphical shortcomings in the PSP version, but they are so small they are hardly worth talking about. Overall, the games produced with the same original flair we all know and love.
The sound is more of a mixed bag, which tends to suffer from irregular drops and technical errors. For example, the sound of a weapon hitting an enemy is not always consistent, and every once in a while, the sound disappears when you walk or jump. It is not a recurring problem and it only happens sporadically in a few of the game, but it was enough for hours of playing to become significant. The rest of the sound and graphics, everything is identical to the PS2 version, which is good news. It is not always easy to bring the same set of 15-year-old technicals to new platforms, and PSP version of the Collection contains all the old soundtracks and effects heard in the correct ol'-style.
You have 28 games, including several installments of Vectorman, Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Ecco the Dolphin franchises, and several singular titles such as Alex Kidd: The Enchanted Castle, Comix Zone, Columns, Virtua Fighter 2, Ristar, and Super Thunder Blade. How can you possibly go wrong? All games are emulated almost flawlessly, with the possible exception of those aforementioned technical errors here and there. And to top it all off, you can save your progress whenever you want, just like you can on the PS2 version. It is quite possibly the most appealing features of Collection, because of the outrageous difficulty of some of the games back then.
The selection of games is excellent, especially as it spans five years of gaming and more than a few genres, and this is a good representation of diversity. It is unfortunate PSP version does not include the arcade version of Altered Beast (an unlockable in the PS2 version), because we all know the arcade version was much, much better. We did not get the three extra arcade games you can find in the PS2 version: Zaxxon, TAC / Scan, and Zektor. These are clear disadvantages of the PSP version, but then again, is the ability to take these games on the go with PSP a certain bonus ... so maybe they cancel each other. We want both versions had somehow managed to include a Streets of Rage, Mutant League, and the niche cult classic Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, but oh well, we should not complain.

The PSP version also gives us the advantage to play through a Wi-Fi connection, and despite the requirement for multiple copies of the game, it's still a good option to have. With multiplayer fun thrown in, a good time had by you and a friend, and if you both grew up with Genesis, the better. Loading times are more than acceptable and switch between games is easy as pie, you can jump directly from the games for the menu - perhaps after saving your progress - and try another classic. Sega went into the project with a very simple philosophy: It wanted to reproduce the game with "the utmost accuracy to the originals as possible," and we must say they achieved that goal. The PSP version does not quite fit together PS2 version in terms of unlockables, and we did not notice the slight technical slip-ups in the non-portable version, either, but none of these drawbacks is critical.
We question the exclusion of certain titles and involvement of others, but then again, could be Sega fan ever completely satisfied with a Genesis collection, unless there were at least 50 games included. For what this budget price title bid, there is very little to complain about, and although none of the games will take very long to complete, do not forget that old problems ... yeah, you can save your progress, but you re still gonna have to try again the last few levels of Sonic and Shinobi III, especially about 7,000 billion times. But hey, the PSP version, you can share your frustration with a buddy, and then approaching the end of super-tough games, you have at least two chances to make it through. After all, misery loves company.
If they ever release another Genesis Collection for Sony's handheld, there are a few improvements they can make-first, although emulation is nearly flawless, it's closer to perfection in the PS2 version than the PSP version. Secondly, it would not be a good idea to throw up some downloadable Genesis games on the PlayStation Store, which you can add to an existing collection? They are already doing it with classic PS1 games, why not take some Virtual Console and increase collections in this way? Third and last, maybe Sega could keep a sort of online poll asking fans which game they would most like to see. Granted, the games in this Sega Genesis Collection is a great choice, but a few are still questionable, and we are well aware of a few more that fans want desperately.
But all in all it's a nice option, especially for gamers on the go. PS2 version might have a bit more in the way of substance, but Wi-Fi multiplayer and inherent portability of the compact PSP makes this version is equally attractive. But, just remember there's no real reason to own both, so just choose what best fits your lifestyle. Sega has never ignore their fans!
